Beginning Database Design and Applications

Students master the fundamental concepts and industry best practices for database application development using MS Access 2003, Structured Query Language (SQL), Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Visual Studio .NET 2003, VB.NET and ASP.NET. The goal of this course is student mastery of not only MS Access database objects such as tables, queries, forms and reports, but also of entity relationship diagrams, data models, database design, data analysis, object oriented programming, and the software application development life-cycle. For a final project, students work in teams to develop database applications that analyze California State Testing results for all district high schools.



Advanced Database Design and Applications

Students master the fundamental concepts and practices of data normalization, data modeling, database object definition, database object manipulation, and database administration using Microsoft SQL Server 2000. Mastery of basic Transact-SQL (T-SQL) and database architecture is a core focus of this class. Students also learn and become skilled in the fundamentals of database application design using Microsoft Visual Studio.NET 2003, VB.NET and ASP.NET. For a final project, students work in competing teams, developing a database driven web-reporting applications for a fictitious client. This college credit class best prepares students for industry internships and entry-level career opportunities that require demonstrable analytical and programming skills using SQL Server and core .NET technologies.
