The TechFutures Class of 2005 has a lot to look forward to:
Over 50 grads from the Class of 2005 and previous graduates will be applying the skills they learned at TechFutures in well-paying internships and jobs over the summer:
- 1. 5 TechFutures graduates selected for prestigious Intel Internships at Intel Folsom
- 3 students from Kennedy High (Angelica Guttierez, Cruz Peregrina and Chris Merrida) and two students from El Cerrito High (Sarah Guthrie and Randy Pang) have been awarded summer internships at Intel Folsom (see previous announcement for details).
- 2. TechFutures awarded $75,000 from Intel Corporation to continue internship program at Intel Clubhouses.
TechFutures has received its largest grant to date from Intel Corporation to support local Bay Area Clubhouses and the Los Angeles Clubhouse. This grant will fund approximately 13 internships over the summer and at least 2 during the school year. Brought back by strong demand from Intel Clubhouse managers, TechFutures grads support Clubhouses in several areas: network administration and support, web and digital design, database design, mentoring and many other projects. Jarele Brickley and Oscar Mendoza, TechFutures 2004 grads (KHS) will manage the TechFutures graduates at Bay Area clubhouses this summer. Student placements will be announced in the next two weeks.
- 3. Other TechFutures Internships
Students are currently interviewing for a variety of summer internships awarded to TechFutures with local Bay Area companies in the areas of web design, database design and networking. More details to follow as specific students are placed.
Kevin Tse (ECHS ’05) has been working with WLC Architects in an internship applying his 3D Studio Max skills to new school construction projects; Lawrence Ma (ECHS 2004) was awarded an internship year round managing the Neurobiology lab networks at UC Davis. Kit San Chung (ECHS 2002) will be back at Intel, this time in Santa Clara, as a college intern. Jaron Roque (ECHS 2003) is now a third year veteran at Autodesk, managing both database and web applications.
- 4. Project Work
In addition to industry internships, TechFutures places students in a number of paid internal internships and jobs. This summer students will be working in networking administration, database design and web design on a variety of different projects for clients. More details on summer placements to come.
- 5. Summary of Results
TechFutures, begun in January 2000 at ECHS, now has programs at three WCCUSD high schools: ECHS, KHS and RHS. Job results to date:
180 job placements. This summer, that number will increase by approximately 50 students.

TechFutures has the highest number of job placements of any vocational/career program in Contra Costa County. 100% of job placements apply and build on the advanced technology training students learn in the TechFutures program. Over 300 students have applied to take the TechFutures program next year at ECHS, KHS and RHS during both the Fall 2005 and Spring 2006 semester, resulting in a demand for 24 class sections (on the block schedule at ECHS and 2-period sections at KHS and RHS).
TechFutures is a two-year advanced technology training and jobs program whose mission is to train at-risk high school youth in cutting-edge internet applications to make them employable in high paying jobs in industry. Operating at three high schools within the WCCUSD at El Cerrito, Kennedy, and Richmond High School, the TechFutures training focuses on high end marketable IT skills in great demand nationwide. TechFutures an innovative “school within a school” and through new, relevant curricula and programs is a model for 21st century vocational training.
